چکیده

easuring changes in the cryosphere from satellite-based altimeters has and will continue to provide data that are essential to our understanding of the long-term trends of the earth’s ice cover. over the past years, ApL has played a major role in airborne field activities observing continental ice sheets, outlet glaciers, and sea ice using the delayDoppler phase-monopulse (D2p) airborne radar altimeter, designed and built by staff at ApL as part of the nAsA instrument incubator program. The D2p altimeter has been deployed during field campaigns in both the Arctic (2002 and 2003) and Antarctic (2003 and 2004). During these airborne deployments, radar data were collected along with simultaneous and coincidental laser altimeter measurements. The resulting comparisons show that the two altimeters respond quite differently to the various cryospheric geologies. This article briefly reviews the D2p system and compares radar and laser altimeter data selected from the campaigns.

Comparison of the Envisat Waveform Retrackers over Inland Waters

Since the launch of ENVISAT satellite in 2002, the Radar Altimetry Mission provides systematic altimeter observations of the Earth surface. The ENVISAT Geophysical Data Records products contain, over all type of surfaces, altimeter ranges derived from four specialized retrackers: Ocean, Ice-1, Ice-2 and Sea-Ice retracker. Among the different goals of the ENVISAT Mission, one directly concerns l...

Analysis of CryoSat’s radar altimeter waveforms over different Arctic sea ice regimes

Satellite altimetry has been used to derive information about sea ice thickness in the Arctic already for several decades. As part of the algorithms applied the shape of the radar signal is used to identify leads, the open water between ice floes. Analysis of airborne altimeter data reveals that the waveform shape can additionally be used to identify different sea ice types. In this study we an...

Combined airborne laser and radar altimeter measurements over the Fram Strait in May 2002

Knowledge of sea ice thickness is critical for the prediction of future climate, and for assessing the significance of changes in thickness. Sea ice thickness can be calculated from radar or laser satellite altimetry measurements of freeboard. However, a lack of knowledge of snow depth introduces significant uncertainties into these calculations. This paper compares the first coincident airborn...

Laser Monitoring of Ice Elevations and Sea-ice Thickness in Greenland

A low-cost Twin-Otter based laser altimetry and scanning system have been set up by KMS in several different commercial aircraft, and flown extensively in connection with airborne gravity activities in the Arctic Ocean north of Greenland, as well as on various research projects on the ice sheet and coastal glaciers in Greenland. The hardware system is based on a Riegl laser swath scanner or Opt...

The Envisat Radar Altimeter System (RA-2)

The mission RA-2 has an essential role to play in the Envisat mission, as indicated in Table 1. Operating over oceans, its data can be used to monitor seasurface topography, thereby supporting research into ocean circulation and sea-level change, as well as providing observations of the sea floor structure or shape, and marine geoid characteristics. It will also be possible to determine near-se...
